The original MCP Toolbox integration with Looker was only released July 25th, 2025 as part of v0.10.0. That brought the ability for an MCP enabled agent such as Gemini-CLI, Claude Desktop, Cursor, etc. to query Looker and act on data driven insights. But we were not content to stand still. We have been rapidly iterating and enabling new capabilities.
In the v0.11.0 release on August 5, 2025, we introduced a new tool — “query url”. The “query url” tool allows the agent to create a query in Looker and then pass back the URL to that query. Then the user could follow that URL to see data in Looker and pick up where the agent left off. After the agent retrieves some data from Looker, the user merely has to prompt “Get me a url for that query” and the agent would return a URL for the user to explore further in Looker.
Now in the v0.12.0 release, we introduce a set of tools to allow the agent to build visualizations in Looker, create saved Looks, and create Looker Dashboards.
- The vis_config parameter has been added to the “query url” tool. Now after a user retrieves some data from Looker, they can give a prompt like “Visualize that data with a stacked area chart and give me a url.” They will get a url to see the visualization in Looker and further explore the data.
- A “make look” tool is now available. The user can give a prompt like “Produce a chart of weekly revenue broken down by product category and save it as a look.” A new look will be produced in the user’s personal folder and a URL link directly to the look will be returned.
- In perhaps the most exciting addition so far, “make dashboard” and “add dashboard element” tools are now available. The user can instruct the agent with a prompt like “Create a sales dashboard for 2024.” The agent can then create a dashboard and add tiles to it. The new dashboard is saved in the user’s personal folder and can be further edited and shared from there.
This is a sample of a dashboard that was created by an agent from just such a simple prompt:
