.si is Slovenia’s country-code top-level domain (ccTLD), introduced in 1992 as the country’s official domain extension.
It is administered by ARNES, the Academic and Research Network of Slovenia, which oversees the .si domain registry and its registration rules. For more than three decades, the extension has primarily represented Slovenian businesses, organizations, and individuals online.
More recently, .si has gained a second association, with “SI” emerging as shorthand for super intelligence. For AI companies and projects, that gives the extension a new branding angle, similar to how .ai, Anguilla’s country-code domain, has become widely associated with artificial intelligence.
.si registration is open worldwide, so a company doesn’t need to be based in Slovenia to use the extension. An AI business can choose .si specifically because “SI” complements its name, product, or positioning.
Why are .si domains gaining attention?
The rise of “SI” as shorthand for “super intelligence” is bringing new attention to Slovenia’s top-level domain, extending its use beyond its geographic roots.
The term stepped onto a much bigger stage on September 29, 2026, when President Donald Trump signed an executive order directing U.S. federal agencies to use “Super Intelligence” and “SI” in place of “Artificial Intelligence” and “AI” in official communications and other non-statutory documents.
By the next day, thousands of new .si domains were being registered.
Hostinger saw the surge up close. On September 29, 512 .si domains were registered through Hostinger. That figure jumped to 3,962 on September 30 and 5,158 on October 1, pushing .si into second place among Hostinger’s best-selling domain extensions, behind only .com.
The rise of .ai domains showed that a country-code extension can find a much wider audience when its letters take on a meaning that fits a growing industry.
Whether .si will become as recognizable as .ai remains to be seen. What is already clear is that “super intelligence” has given the extension a new audience, with thousands of new registrations following.
Who can register a .si domain?
Anyone can register a .si domain, regardless of where they live or where their business is based.
ARNES does not require domain holders to have a Slovenian address or local presence, so individuals and organizations outside Slovenia can register one as well.
That makes .si useful for the following types of websites:
- Slovenian businesses and organizations – .si gives the website a clear connection to Slovenia, making it a natural choice for companies, institutions, and projects serving a Slovenian audience.
- International businesses targeting Slovenia – a company expanding into Slovenia can use .si for a local version of its website or a market-specific presence.
- AI and superintelligence projects – for a company developing superintelligence technology, .si can directly reflect its field, making it a useful extension to consider when choosing an AI startup name. A business building an AI reasoning system, for example, could use .si to reinforce its focus on super intelligence.
- Brands that can make .si part of the name – .si can become part of a brandable domain name when the letters complete a word or phrase across the dot. A fictional brand called Visi, for example, could use vi.si, making the extension part of what people read and remember.
Once you’ve found a .si domain that works for your business or project, it still needs to be available and meet Registry .si’s requirements.
Some names are reserved or protected and can’t be registered, so it’s worth checking the registration terms before settling on a name.
What’s the difference between .si and .ai?
.ai has a well-established connection to artificial intelligence, while .si still strongly signals Slovenia and is only beginning to develop a technology association through “super intelligence.”
The comparison below shows how the two extensions differ in meaning, audience, branding, and typical use.

For a Slovenian business, .si has a clear purpose even when AI has nothing to do with the company. It connects the website to Slovenia, which can be useful when the business primarily serves customers in the country.
For an AI company, the distinction is different. The .ai TLD has an established association with artificial intelligence, while the use of .si for “super intelligence” is still emerging.
If you’re considering .si to mean “super intelligence,” think about how closely that meaning relates to what your company or project actually does.
Is a .si domain right for you?
A .si domain is a good fit for you if you serve a Slovenian audience, work on superintelligence, or can use “si” as part of your brand name.
Before registering one, consider these four factors to determine whether .si fits your website now and in the future:
- Audience – Choose .si when the Slovenian connection is relevant to that audience or when super intelligence is central to what your website offers.
- Brand – When choosing a domain name, write out the full name with .si and say it aloud. Check whether the extension completes the brand name, keeps the domain short, and makes it easy to spell and remember.
- Purpose – Define what .si represents in your domain: Slovenia, super intelligence, or part of the brand name itself. Having a clear answer helps you avoid choosing the extension only because it is currently gaining attention.
- Long-term relevance – Assess whether the domain will still describe your business or project if it expands into new markets, changes its products, or moves beyond its current technology focus.
