We are thrilled to announce the General Availability (GA) of the AlloyDB Omni K8s Operator version 1.7.0!
Elevating Enterprise Databases with PostgreSQL 18, TDE, and Advanced DR
Building on the robust foundations of our previous releases, version 1.7.0 is a massive leap forward for demanding enterprise deployments. This release pushes the boundaries of operational resilience by bringing cutting-edge database innovations, fortified security, and expanded operational flexibility right to your Kubernetes environments.
Here is a deeper dive into the powerful new capabilities packed into this release.
Embracing the Future with PostgreSQL 18
Staying current with the latest database technology is critical, and we are making sure you are always ahead of the curve.
- PostgreSQL 18 Support: AlloyDB Omni now supports PostgreSQL 18. Customers can seamlessly upgrade to the newly supported PostgreSQL 18.1 via the Operator to leverage the absolute latest database features and performance improvements.
- Version Currency: To ensure that all users are operating with highly stable and optimized versions, this release also includes minor version refreshes for PostgreSQL 17.7, 16.11, and 15.15.
Uncompromising Enterprise Security
Security and compliance for enterprise workloads are paramount, and 1.7.0 delivers major enhancements to protect your critical data.
- Transparent Data Encryption (TDE): Elevate your data security with seamless TDE integration, ensuring your data at rest is protected with enterprise-grade encryption standards (available beginning with AlloyDB Omni 18.1.0).
- Vault-Managed Admin Credentials: Streamline your security operations by managing admin account credentials directly through Vault, heavily reducing manual overhead and improving compliance.
- Hardened Pod Security: Database pods now feature a hardened security posture right out of the box, with restricted Kubernetes securityContext settings enabled by default. This includes non-root execution and read-only root filesystems.
- Operator user credentials management: You control how the credentials of even the superuser (aka alloydbadmin) and monitoring user of Operator are rotated
Advanced Disaster Recovery & Seamless Scaling
We’ve significantly invested in making your database operations highly resilient and easier to maintain.
- Symmetric Disaster Recovery (DR) Rewind: Enhance your business continuity with new rewind trigger functionality for symmetric DR configurations. You can now trigger a rewind on standbys of a rewound secondary cluster, ensuring robust data protection across complex topologies.
- Low Downtime Scaling: Need more resources? You can now perform CPU and memory scaling operations with minimal downtime using Low Downtime Maintenance (LDTM). LDTM enhancements also cover minor version updates for much smoother lifecycle management.
Expanded Observability and Customization
Gain deeper insights and tailor your database connections precisely to your enterprise requirements.
- Custom Metrics Framework: We have introduced a brand new framework that allows you to define, collect, and track custom metrics specific to your workload.
- Enhanced Memory Metrics: Added detailed memory allocation metrics for vastly improved storage and performance monitoring.
- Active Directory & Port Customization: We improved Active Directory integration by adding support for hostssl connection types, multi-domain LDAP base DNs, and customizable LDAP search attributes. You can also now configure custom database port numbers for your clusters.
Deploy Anywhere: GDCso Bare Metal and OpenShift
- GDCso Bare Metal Support: Enterprise readiness for AlloyDB Omni on Google Distributed Cloud (GDC) software only on bare metal lets the operator manage the full database lifecycle directly on your physical infrastructure. This includes provisioning, high availability, and disaster recovery.
- Red Hat OpenShift Certification: Following the groundwork laid in 1.6.0, AlloyDB Omni has applied for official Red Hat OpenShift certification.
Conclusion and Next Steps
The AlloyDB Omni K8s Operator 1.7.0 release represents a major milestone in providing the critical features enterprise customers need to deploy, secure, and monitor their most demanding database workloads.
